A MESSAGE FROM REV. KAREN KINNEY: EXPLORING THE BOOK OF REVELATION

Grace and peace to you,

This Sunday, we begin a six-week series exploring the Book of Revelation, perhaps one of the most misunderstood books of the Bible. What was John of Patmos trying to say to the Christian community of his time? What is up with all the visions and imagery? How do we deal with the fact that revelation is translated from the Greek word for apocalypse?

So many questions and we get to explore them in two ways: first, each Wednesday evening (July 23 – Aug. 27) at 7 p.m. on Zoom, we will look at the upcoming Sunday scripture. What questions do you have? What can we learn as we study the passage? Second, come each Sunday as we explore in worship what the Scripture lesson might mean for us today.

So what will be revealed this Sunday as we explore Revelation 1:1-8? The last verse says this: “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “the one who is and was and is coming, the Almighty.”

Do you find it comforting that God and by extension Jesus Christ have been present, is present and will be present no matter what stage of life we are in? That God breaks in to our lives as individuals and as a community? Do you find it comforting that Jesus is a faithful witness to the way in which we are loved and set free by God through Jesus?

I find it amazing that on this day when we begin to explore Revelation, we will celebrate the infant baptism of Bennett Alexander Mountain in worship, and later in the day, we remember the life of Jan Bonge at 1 p.m. memorial service.

I am the Alpha and Omega, says the Lord God. I will be with you in the beginning and the end. I will not leave you.

Come and see, come and explore.

Pastor Karen
