Bringing Our Loss to a National Light

The tragic losses of celebrity chef and author Anthony Bourdain and fashion designer Kate Spade, brings to mind a recent tragic loss in our own family, and the sensitive and insightful message that Rev. J.C. Austin delivered at the memorial service for our own Samuel Kenneth Plank.

Those struggling with such losses, or trying to discuss the issue with young friends and family members, may be helped by reading Pastor Austin’s sermon:

USA Today has published an opinion column written by Pastor J.C. Austin, titled “What you can learn from a suicide in my congregation,” casting light on the medical, social, and spiritual dimensions of depression and suicide. The column is a wonderfully intelligent and compassionate answer to the confusion and despair such deaths raise. It is also a nationally prominent ray of light on the tragic loss of Samuel, earlier this year.
