Alf Halvorson, Pastor/Head of Staff

"Deeply committed to Christ" “A person of congruency, transparency, and integrity”  “Enjoys people and people enjoy him”  “Committed to his family”  “Servant leader” “Works easily with others” “Visionary consensus builder”  “Extremely Intelligent” “A life long learner” “Warm and generous sense of humor” “High energy guy”  “Contagious enthusiasm” “Preaches intelligent, relevant, thought-provoking, biblically-based, challenging, and enjoyable sermons”  “[his] insights amaze me”  “Humble” “Feels like a pretty ordinary person who serves an extraordinary God”  “ Loves the Lord and His church”

These are some of the phrases used to describe Alf Halvorson. They flesh out the facts of his formal resume and observations of his references.  Alf [pronounced like ‘Golf’ without the ‘G’] was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota; moved to Nevada, Missouri while in secondary school where he graduated from high school in 1983. He graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.9/4.0) from Luther College near LaCrosse, Wisconsin with majors in Political Science and Psychology in 1987. His original plan was to be a lawyer but God had another call for Alf.  After encouragement from professors, his college roommate, and future wife,  Alf attended Princeton Theological Seminary instead of law school.  He graduated in two degree areas: Master of Divinity degree with emphasis in Biblical Studies and Preaching and a Master of Theology degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling. Alf is currently at the dissertation phase of his Doctorate in Mission & Evangelism at Austin Presbyterian theological Seminary, Austin Texas.

Alf has most recently served at First & Calvary Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Missouri as Associate Pastor, Executive Pastor, and Acting Head of Staff.  Alf's spiritual gifts include leadership, preaching/teaching, evangelism, spiritual development, and communication. Alf's joy is reaching out with the gospel and growing followers of Christ into maturity.  He is passionate for God and God’s church; and compassionate with people.

Alf feels blessed to have a wife, Shari, who has walked side by side with him on this journey for over twenty years.  She is not only supportive of his ministry, but also is a strong Christian herself, while maintaining her own career as a part-time medical intensive care nurse and instructor (CCRN).  She has taught Sunday school to young children, played guitar and sung in praise bands, participated in Disciple Bible groups, and  instituted a shawl ministry at First & Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Alf and Shari have two children, Matt who is almost 17, and Kristen who is 15.  Both are athletes, musicians, good students, and growing Christians.  Alf values his family relationships, knows their importance to an effective vocation, and attempts to give as careful attention to them as to the demands of his formal ministry.  He is committed to keeping promises both in his ministry and to his family.  His goal is to sustain a productive and balanced calling for the long haul.

Regarding hobbies, Alf’s first love was basketball, having played it competitively both in high school and in college, until injuries sidelined him.  Also, he likes to golf, hike, and read.  His family enjoys going to sporting events, traveling together, watching movies, playing games, talking around a fire pit while making s’mores, and eating ‘Cinnabon’ whenever possible.

Steven Brundage, Interim Pastor for Care Ministries

Rev. Steve Brundage brings 10 years of ordained ministry as Co-pastor or Solo Pastor in churches in Ohio, and Western Pennsylvania, and as Interim Pastor in Mount Bethel and Nazareth. A native of Ohio, he was raised in St. Louis before his baccalaureate studies at Rensselaer in Troy, New York. Following graduation in Mechanical Engineering, Steve worked for a number of machine tool companies in engineering, management, and automation of operations. Prior to ministry, Steve’s lay leadership included his ordination as Deacon and Elder, service as Clerk of Session, and chairing Worship, Christian Education, and Long-Range planning committees. He experienced the call to seminary that led him to Princeton with his wife, Laurel, who is Pastor of Pleasant Valley Presbyterian in Brodheadsville.

He is a trained Interim Pastor by the PCUSA and is active with Interim Pastors groups in the Lehigh Valley. He’s served on Administration, and Mission committees, Lehigh Presbytery’s Board of Trustees, and is a member of Lehigh’s New Church Care Team. He loves gardening, reading, canoeing, travel, role-playing computer games, Sunday crossword puzzles, and getting together with friends for almost any excuse to play board games.

Brently Groshong, Emergent Worship Leader

Contemporary Worship leader Brently GroshongBrently Groshong, the founder of Carbonated Worship and the Emergent Worship Leader at First Presbyterian Church in Bethlehem, is passionate about communicating how real God’s love is for us. If you were to ask Brently what his main focus is, he would tell you, “To connect people with Jesus Christ”. Most of the time this means hands-on leadership in worship and equipping musicians at places such as FPC. Brently recently relocated to the Northeast from the Pacific Northwest where he was a worship pastor for nine years. In addition to his work in Washington, Pennsylvania and around the United States, he has traveled extensively oversees with Mike Silva Evangelism and with Lamar Boschman from the International Worship Institute. Everyday he wakes up with absolute joy because he still can’t believe that he gets to do this for a living.
