Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by the time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter answered him, “Lord if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” – Matthew 14:22-33
These past few weeks we’ve introduced a new song called “Oceans.” It all happened when I sat down at my computer compiling some music videos for our Facebook Music Video Friday’s. I stumbled upon an acoustic version of the song and immediately found myself wanting to sing this song on the top of my lungs (which I did, alone in my office here at FPC Bethlehem). Have you ever been affected by a song so much that you just can’t stop singing it? I have many times.
The above scripture just reminds me how great and mysterious our God is. I love how the writers of the song tell the story in verse one:
You call me out upon the waters, the great unknown where feet may fail. And there I find you in the mystery in oceans deep, my faith will stand.
I am reminded of Peter and his doubts upon the waters with Jesus. I of little faith have so much to learn and I am blessed to know that God never fails regardless of where I am at in my walk of faith.
My prayer is that we would take a leap of faith to walk upon the waters and trust the Holy Spirit to lead us wherever God would call us.
