Lent Season of Prayer Week VII: Almighty God

When we think of God as the Almighty, we are struck by His power and by the fact that He is indeed a great, strong, and awesome God. God revealed Himself to Abraham as El-Shaddai, God Almighty. The aspect of God's character He conveyed to Abraham was that He--the Almighty God—was capable of fulfilling the promises He made to him.

In Exodus 6:2–3, God reminded Moses of His more personal, intimate name: Yahweh, Jehovah, the LORD. Yahweh is the name of a Person...a divine Person. This name emphasized to Moses God's immediate and continuing presence with him.

David trusted in the Almighty God when he refused King Saul's armor and weapons and instead used his slingshot, five stones, and his faith in God's power to defeat the giant Philistine, Goliath. Yet David also knew the Almighty God in a personal way as we see in the psalms he wrote. And God called David a man after His own heart.

God's desire for an intimate relationship with people culminated in God's sending Jesus--God in the flesh—His only Son—to die on the cross so that our sins might be forgiven. The Almighty God humbled Himself so that we might have a personal relationship with Him. This supreme sacrifice makes the title "Almighty God" even more remarkable. And we look forward to the day when we all can join those in heaven who say, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come."

"When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, 'I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.'"

EXODUS 6:2-3
"God also said to Moses, 'I am the Lord.  I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty but by my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them.'"

1 SAMUEL 17:45
"David said to the Philistine, 'You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.'"

PSALM 46:7
"The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress."

PSALM 89:8
"Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?
You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you."

"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is and is to come."

"And the twenty-four elders, who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying: 'We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, the One who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and have begun to reign.'"

Almighty God, we praise you for your power and strength. We bow before your awesome presence. We worship you as Lord of the universe. We recognize that we are only allowed to come into Your holy presence because of Your compassionate death and resurrection, forgiving us of our sin. How can we thank You enough for caring for us, loving us, and dying for us! Forgive us for trying to slay our "giants" alone, rather than relying on Your strength and might. Help us to appropriate Your power, love and forgiveness in our daily lives. We pray in the strong name of Jesus, our risen Lord. Amen.

SONG:Praise to the Lord, the Almighty by Joachim Neander

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;
Praise Him in glad adoration.

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee;
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
If with His love He befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord, oh, let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him;
Let the Amen sound from His people again,
Gladly for aye we adore Him.
