NEWS FROM OUR SENIOR PASTOR

March 17, 2017

Just miles away in New York City, close to Penn Station, block letters adorn a post office building:

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds"

It’s not the official motto of the United States Post Office, but I’ve assumed it most of my life. Neither snow, nor sleet, nor anything will keep the mail from being delivered.

But, we keep learning in our new home. Thanks Stella.

Turns out when it snows, if you don’t dig out your mailbox, you don’t get mail.  It’s probably subjective—how much snow removal is necessary. But, getting your mail is not unconditional. You’re not getting the love—the mail, unless you do the work. You would have probably laughed watching me and Mark shoveling our walkway and digging out the mailbox.

I hear a lot these days about God’s unconditional love—God loves us unconditionally no matter what. NO matter your sin. No matter how much you do. No matter what.

It’s true that God loved you before you even knew you needed him. He sent Jesus into the world to die in your place, for your sin. God did for you what you could never do.

But there’s more. Don Carson is right when he says that “the love of God in our culture has been purged of anything the culture finds uncomfortable. The love of God has been sanitized, democratized, and above all sentimentalized.” (Carson, The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God, 11).

While God’s love is unconditional and you could never earn it, God’s love is not unchallenging. He is holy and our brokenness and sin break his heart. God loves you too much to leave you. When you put your trust in him, he forgives you… but he also begins to move you. He begins to invite you into a different life—of following Jesus.

This weekend we continue in our Red Letter Jesus Series, where we look at the words of Jesus. Jesus tells the Samaritan woman at the well—“I am he.” “I am the one that knows everything about you—and I still love you.” “I am the one who wants so much more from you.” Jesus meets her in her mess and invites her to so much more.

I’ll be preaching in the Kirk Center (Saturday, 6 p.m.; Sunday 9 and 11 a.m.) and the Sanctuary (Sunday, 10 a.m.). Sunday at 10 and 11 a.m., we will baptize the newest of our covenant children. What a gift to get to promise to teach the good news of Jesus to the next generation.

See you Sunday!

Your pastor and friend,

Dr. Marnie Crumpler
Senior Pastor
