NEWS FROM OUR SENIOR PASTOR

May 19, 2017

On Sunday, November 14, 1875 in the parlor of the YMCA in Bethlehem, twenty-one people entered into a covenant with God. Four elders were elected and ordained, Communion was celebrated, and the newly formed congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem was born.

Ours is a rich and blessed history. We have seen the Psalmist’s words come to life:

                            For the Lord is good;
                                                          his steadfast love endures forever,
                                                        and his faithfulness to all generations.

142 years later, how powerful to celebrate the legacy of those who have gone before us and the ways God’s faithfulness keeps moving amongst us. We see His faithfulness as we grow—both deeper in our relationships with God and as we grow—in numbers with confirmation students, new members and baptisms. We see His faithfulness in our weekly worship—as we joyfully praise God in the Sanctuary and in the Kirk Center. We see His faithfulness as He calls us to love the world in Jesus’ name.

I can’t wait for our Legacy Weekend services. Dr. David Joynt, the pastor at Valley Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona, will be our guest preacher.  David may be our guest preacher, but he is First Presbyterian family. In his own bio, he talks about how he was raised and nurtured in our church where his parents, Anne and Carey served as elders. David graduated from Lehigh with a degree in the classics, followed by a degree in Oxford and a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has served churches in Delaware and New Jersey.

David has been a friend and great support to me since I arrived here in Bethlehem almost a year ago, helping me learn more about you, our great congregation. I am very excited to welcome him to the pulpit. He will be preaching on Hebrews 12—“Dreaming Together for Tomorrow” in the Sanctuary (Sunday, 10 a.m.) and in the Kirk Center (Saturday 6 p.m., Sunday 9 and 11 a.m.) Also in each of the services, we will get some advice from some of our long-time members. They have much wisdom for us as we continue to lift up the name of Jesus Christ and live into our future together. This is a not-to-miss weekend! See you there.

Your pastor and friend,

Dr. Marnie Crumpler
Senior Pastor
