NEWS FROM OUR SENIOR PASTOR

September 22, 2017

All week I have enjoyed watching you act out your love of God and neighbor by doing B.E.L.L.S – Michael Frost’s acronym for living the way of Jesus that I shared in the services.

B – Bless people
E – Eat with people
L – Listen to the Spirit
L – Learn Christ
S – See yourself as Sent

I have seen you give out water bottles at the gym, invite people over for dinner.  I have heard about conversations you have had with colleagues and neighbors.  What a joy it is to see your light shine throughout Bethlehem--pointing people to Jesus.

I am really excited about this Sunday, where we will continue our “Back to Church” series where we are learning from Jesus his dreams for the church.  The very last thing he said to his disciples as he ascended into heaven was to “make disciples”. What does that mean for us? What does it mean for our ministry to our own congregation? What does it mean for our ministry to our community?

I’ll be preaching in the Sanctuary (Sunday, 10 am) and the Kirk Center (Saturday, 6 pm; Sunday 9 and 11 am).  In all the services, we will also be letting you know about a small group opportunity.  Small groups are deep in the DNA of this congregation.  We want to be a congregation that not only meets in rows but also in circles.  Click here to get a preview.

Just this morning, I have heard from many of you about a memo sent out from Rev. Bill Hess to the PCUSA congregation that addresses the legal proceedings.  I am disturbed that Rev. Hess, who did not even attend the trial, makes very disparaging remarks (which I choose not to repeat) about our witnesses at trial. His statements are false.  Our witnesses at the trial spoke with great integrity in a difficult and contentious climate. Specifically, they testified that you, as a congregation, never voted as a congregation to surrender your property rights by voting to affirm the trust clause.  This is a factually accurate statement, and any suggestion to the contrary is simply wrong.

I am deeply saddened that Rev. Hess would resort to attacks on our members. This is not the way church leaders should act, even when disagreeing on other points.  Our long-time church leaders who took the stand on behalf of the congregation did so with the utmost honesty, and frankly deserve better.

I do not believe that Rev. Hess’s letter reflects the views of the overwhelming majority of the PC(USA) group.  Please do not ascribe his wrongful assertions to members we have known and loved for many years.  I expect that we, as an ECO congregation, can lead by example, love, and Christian compassion.  Let us do our part to honor God in how we conduct ourselves, and pray that the vitriol washes away and we are able to resolve this issue with grace and honor to God.

As I am writing, the PCUSA sent out a corrected version of their letter (at our lawyer’s request) which removes some of the accusations.  I am grateful for that.  Perhaps there is hope that the PC(USA) leadership would consider our settlement offers so that we can bless each other into our futures.

Your pastor and friend,

Dr. Marnie Crumpler
Senior Pastor
