Session is the democratic governing body consisting of the Teaching Elders (pastors) and members elected by the congregation to the office of Ruling Elder. Elders exercise leadership, government, and discipline and should be persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment. Their life is a demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world.
A Ruling Elder serves a three-year term, with the option of serving a second three-year term if called to do so, and provides leadership for one of seven ministry areas: Worship, Discipleship, Congregational Life & Care, Mission & Outreach, Nominating, Whole Life Stewardship and Personnel. The Session reviews the actions and directions of all Committees of Session and works closely with the Board of Trustees and the Board of Deacons.

Deacons are FPCB’s lead caregivers, Christ’s hands and feet in the community. They minister to those in need: the sick, the friendless, and the distressed, both within and beyond the FPC Bethlehem community of faith. Deacons convey Christ’s love and show God’s presence by serving the needs of the congregation. They are of spiritual character, warm sympathies, brotherly or sisterly love, honest repute, and sound judgment. The Board of Deacons’ umbrella covers 18 separate and distinct ministries, seven of which are directly coordinated by a deacon. The other 11 ministries are coordinated by lay people, and a deacon acts as a liaison with church staff.
Deacons are elected by the congregation and each serves a three-year term, with the option of serving a second three-year term if called to do so. The Board of Deacons meets the first Tuesday of each month. Additional meetings may arise within the ministries as needed.
